The Big Green Egg Company wanted $435 for this table. I built it out of Cypress and weatherproofed it with 3 coats of Spar Varnish for 1/4 the retail price.
Good looking table. I've had my eye on the Green Egg for quite some time. I agree, building your own table is the way to go. Let me know what you think of your "Egg".
This egg is amazing. I have been trying to smoke meat for years without any success. This thing takes all the work and worry out of the equation. Pricey but worth it if you have the disposable income for it.
Welcome to the egg head family, you wont regret your decision, you can find egg heads at http://www.eggheadforum.com
I also built my own table, I used cedar, its looking pretty grey now. The price they want for thier tables is outragous.
It is 60"w x 31 d x 33"h
If you use these measurements be aware that the cover they sell will not fit. If you want to use the cover, which covers not only the egg but table as well, you will have go to a retail outlet and measure it up. Mine is just a bit too big.
While I see the nice project and cost savings, I also see a potential for disaster. How does this not catch on fire and possibly spread to the house close by?
Nice table and one that I will build one day for my smoker-grill although we don't have the Big Green Egg, we have the similar Bubba Keg that we bought at Home Depot for about half of the BGE. One of the expensive aspects of the BGE is the thick ceramic it is made of whereas the Bubba Keg Grill is made of insulated steel. I have had it at 800 degrees and I could comfortably put my hand on the lower outside of the grill so it is very well insulated. The BGE is a great grill based on everything I have read but my family loves the Bubba Keg Grill and use it much more than our previous gas grill and with many more varied foods.
The BGE is about 2" thick, made out of heat resistant ceramics, it insulates well that as long as you are not touching the wood it wont catch on fire, which is why he put a patio brick under neath. I have seen many tables where they were touching, when the BGE is removed the wood is a little discolored, but they never caught on fire.
Ted,
What the picture doesn't show very well is that there is a one inch gap between the table and the egg. These smokers do not get as hot as a regular BBQ grill; in fact you can touch the smoker while it is cooking without melting the skin right off your finger. I have not measured it but I suspect it is right around the same temperature as a good hot cup of coffee.
