Project Information

I have 4 air guns. 1 for staples, 1 for car lug nuts and 2 nailer's. I've had them stored on the shelves in the plastic suitcases they came in. This takes a lot of space and they aren't conveniently at hand when they are needed. This results in them being underused.

I have very little wall space to just hang them, just 20", so I decided to build a cabinet for that little space between my bandsaw and the drillpress. I wanted to store all four tools plus the nails, staples and lug bolt sockets and extension. This little cabinet does that.

The whole thing is made out of pine. Most of the wood is recycled shelving materials. The drawer is joined with box joints cut on my scroll saw. They took about 15 minutes to mark and cut and they fit perfect, so I just had to glue them up straight off the saw. The drawer front is a separate piece screwed on. The drawer bottom and the main door panel were ply backing under some oak panels on my son's old kitchen bar (I knew I could use that some day!). The door frame is mitered and rabbited on the back where the panel is inset and glued on. The drawer bottom is just glued and nailed on. Oh, and I almost forgot. I hung it on a French cleat just to please you French cleat fans.

Now I am planning to improve my whole workshop storage to make things easier to get at and to free up space wherever I can. Meanwhile I will probably be doing a lot of nailing!

this is a great way to solve the problem…i can tell you think like me when it comes to cabinet construction and things being held solid…i can see that you have about 5 or 6 screws in the back holding it to the wall…lol…that cabinet isnt going anywhere is it mike….that is how i usually do things…i tend to go over a tad sometimes…but i know for sure its not going to fall off the wall…lol….good job mike…grizz

Looks good from here Mike! I have been wondering where you went or what you where up to. Looks like good ol' Yankee ingenuity at work in Norway ;-))

I'm still trying to get room for my lathe set up, just found a Craftsman tool box on casters that I can barely see into the top section :)) That should go a long way towards organizing all my tools.

Thanks for your nice comments guys, and yes Grizz I am a screw nut who just doesn't know when to stop. That's why I'm into nailing now, but somehow it doesn't seem to help much as I also use too many nails!

I haven't been much in touch the last two weeks because my email server was down while my son was on vacation, (it's his server). He got back today and fixed it. I now have 120 emails to go through!

Hi Stefang,
I'm back from the holydays (in case you missed me..;-)
It's just the way I love it! Simple and effective, but still with class.
My new plan are also the French cladding and then a lot of space saving now, start to wonder if I will ever acually do some projects apart from the workshop improvements…
Best thoughts,
Mads

hey mike..i got thinking that one of those piano seat lid catches would be neat for your door..ah just an idea…lifting it a few more inches and just letting it lean open is alright to…....im working on a project now…and i get so pooped staying out longer then my back likes…i don't have the energy to put all my tools up either…so later tonight i might to out when its cooler and clean things up a bit…...i think i would like to have a set up like norm did….do the work and have someone come in behind me and clean it all up…..now that would be a luxury…

I especially like the drawer to store all of the nails & staples. I can never find the right ones when I need them.

Thanks all. The door doesn't need a latch. The hinges are at the top, so gravity holds it shut and I just hold it open with one hand while I remove a gun with the other. Simple and effective! The door is just to keep out the dust. I have to admit that I hate metal hinges, but I had to restrain myself from obsessing about a simple shop storage shelf and making wooden ones. It will be interesting to see what Larry came up with on his dart cabinet.

Mike,

Glad you came up with a solution for your dilemma.

It looks very effective for your needs.

Are you going to french polish it? ;-)
