Project Information

A friend of mine gave me a pickup load of red oak scraps. Now I normally use QSWO for my pieces but I couldn't turn it down, so I made some Mission style clocks out of it. Since the grain isn't as interesting as the QSWO I stained these with an ebony finish. Gives it an antique look I think. Face and pendulum are etched nickel silver and then hand hammered. I added some Paua shell cabochons in the corners for a splash of color. Thanks for looking…

Where did you find the ebony finish, please share, I really like the pins through the tendons on the side, a very nice touch.

Thanks LJ's for the nice commments. Finishing is not one of my strong areas so I wing it most of the time. I'm not sure if this is ebonized or just a really dark color but this is what I used. I stained it first with Homestead Transfast Dark Mission Brown dye. Lightly sanded with 400 then stained it with Minwax Ebony stain. 3 coats lacquer sanded between coats then dark brown Briwax. That's it. I couldn't get it dark enough with just the dye and the Ebony stain was worse by it's self so this is what I came up with.

Awesome collections of clocks. I really enjoy your work. I really enjoy this one because of its modern meets old world look. But the wood is only have the story. The above and beyond is in the details. Where do you get your metal work for the clock faces n such?
