Project Information

Hi Everyone,

First I'd like to say Thank You to all those who have welcomed me to LumberJocks. I've been lurking for several months now and finally decided to sign up when I saw some of the 'frugal' postings.

Almost everything I make uses recycled wood or, in the case of this planter, firewood. The handles are Oak from an old futon frame that a friend had in her "to burn" pile. The remainder is made from several pieces of Siberian Elm off one of the firewood piles I have around on the property.

The Elm was first split with a froe then roughly flattened using a router and sled and finally brought to 1/2" thickness with a thickness planer.

I am really happy with the way the wheel turned out - 1/16" laminations for the rim and then I made the hub/spokes. Backwards I know, but it worked.

The axle and axle pins were "hand made" from some of the scrap Elm.

I hope you like it.

Wow. This is amazing. I was planning on building one of these myself. I'm glad I am keeping good company. Like you, I like to use "found lumber" when it is available.

Be sure you drill some holes for drainage. I would hate to have it rot, although I am sure the water would find its way through any cracks.

I think people traveling on wagons in the 1800's would have asked you to build wheels for everyone they knew! That's a well built planter and it looks great, especially the wheel!

Very nice work. I was thinking of making a wheelbarrow for the yard, but had not decided on the wheel. This one looks great.

I guess i have been REALLY negligent in my LJ duties by not responding to your comments. I apologize to all of you for the lack of attentiveness on my part.

Thank You for all the encouraging comments.

Mr. helluvawreck … this is not my own design. As I recall it is a quarter scale of this planter I found on the 'net:

wrtnaz: If your still trying to figure out how to make the wheel I can try to describe how i did it if you like.

280-some days late … I will now go sit in the corner and contemplate how to be a better part of the LJs community :-(
