Project Information

This piece is about 10 inches in diameter. The maple was from my father's firewood pile, and it had got a little punky if you look closely. I added a very thin walnut rim and then made a small top out of walnut and blackwood for the piece.

I finished it slowly using 100% tung oil. Takes a while, but I usually enjoy this finish after it is all done.

Now, here's the funny thing - Almost everyone that picks this up from my desk at work thinks the top is attached to the piece. When they go to tilt the piece up, the top falls off. This has happened 3 times this week! I turn some boxes with friction fit lids, and although this one has a nice fit, it is not enough to hold the lid on if it is tilted upside down.

I wonder if it will survive :)

As always, I enjoy your feedback. Cheers, Richard

This is beautiful! You might put a small sign by this piece with a warning that top comes off! This might make it last?

Great form..great wood combination….......and nice finial. What's not to like.
This is a very nice piece…... Your spalted Maple really adds to the over-all appearance of the lidded vesel…. I am impressed with this one….......

Thanks everyone. Forgot to mention that the finial was also a "re-use" item. The finial is blackwood and was intended to be about 1/3 taller for a different project. I hit a weak spot or was too heavy handed and snapped it just below where I mounted this to the lid. I'm still a little hit or miss with some of my finials.

It's been sitting in a drawer for months waiting to find a home on a little lower profile vessel like this.

Nice job, I like the way you made the lid-thin and flat and nestles in the top.

THanks everyone.

Groy87, I went with a simple but slow finish on this one
- sand 220, 330, 400, 600, 1200 grit
- coat with tung oil, dry for 2-3 weeks
- 2nd coat with tung oil, again dry for 2-3 weeks
- Buff with wax using a bealle buffing system. Once tung oil drys, it can really buff to a nice finish. Problem is if you rush it, it never comes out as bright…needs to be very very dry.

Cheers,
Richard
