Project Information

I have always been a big admirer of the Nelson Slat Bench, but I had never seen one up close and personal until a couple of years ago. I always though it represented strength and unity using slender graceful lines. When I finally found one up close I was sorely disappointed to say the least. Maybe it was not an original but it did not give me confidence enough to even sit on it. So when I had a chance I decided to give it a rethink and build what I had always envisioned in my mind. I used local Maple and Black Walnut to contrast the different pieces and exposed as much of the joinery as I could as this was the first piece I built while learning woodworking. Used a light coat of Danish Tung oil and countless coats of Minwax Poly.

Did you say this was the FIRST piece you built while learning woodworking??? That's just awesome! I really like the design and the contrasting woods. Do you find that having the base narrow at the bottom makes it at all tippy? Just wonder what it's like in use.

Beautiful work.

Hey Jeff. Yes that was my first project. I always tinkered with hand tools growing up but a year ago I found a local cabinetmaker who taught me how to use the tools in his shop for a fee. I dreamed of being able to know how to use real woodworking tools and so a friend of mine told me about this guy who taught him how to make speakers (he's an audiophile). I asked him if he would teach me woodworking and this was my introductory project. Don't get me wrong it took a long time and I made many mistakes, but it was all very well worth it.
