Project Information

I have always been a big admirer of the Nelson Slat Bench, but I had never seen one up close and personal until a couple of years ago. I always though it represented strength and unity using slender graceful lines. When I finally found one up close I was sorely disappointed to say the least. Maybe it was not an original but it did not give me confidence enough to even sit on it. So when I had a chance I decided to give it a rethink and build what I had always envisioned in my mind. I used local Maple and Black Walnut to contrast the different pieces and exposed as much of the joinery as I could as this was the first piece I built while learning woodworking. Used a light coat of Danish Tung oil and countless coats of Minwax Poly.

Really neat design, but those edges look painful to me. (kids, grandkids, bad eyes beware) I am always in awe of designs that outside of my skill level. Where compound joinery is used, I am always drawn into the design to take a closer look. It's a puzzling thought to figure out what to clamp first.

Did you obtain plans for building or did you design yourself? I would love to make one of these.

Very nice. I'm guessing you can't play Yahtzee on that table? ;)

Edges could definitely be painful. I've told the wife that when she gets pregnant I will run around the house and route round edges on all of our furniture. :)

Unfortunately I don't have any plans. I used a picture of the bench I found on the internet and built it from that.

You can play Yahtzee on it if you put a big piece of glass over it. This has been suggested several times and I may just do it one day after I spill something on the rug. :)

Beautiful design and great workmanship.

For me, this is what woodworking is all about. I don't care to build something that replicates what I can buy at the furniture store. I always want to build something that I cannot buy at the furniture store - something that is distinct and unique. This bench/table qualifies.

Well done.

Gorgeous! I agree with Rich, this is what woodworking is all about. A piece of true art AND true function rolled into one extremely streamlined, simple and yet utterly complex piece. Love it.

Beautiful bench. Looks like a lot of work was put into it. I think that a lot of people, not people here of course, don't understand how furniture gets put together. They think you but 2 peices of wood together and add a screw. A piece like this really shows how much work and effort goes into somehting the average person would probably consider simple and would expect to pay $20 at Ikea.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words and encouragement! This project really ignited my love for woodworking so it's more than just a table to me, and it's feels good to know that there are other like-mined people out there who get it. Thanks again.
