Honoring a lost friend...

At 12:00 midnight., our beloved yellow lab Deacon developed severe respiratory distress. We took him to the Animal Emergency Hospital in town. He was previously diagnosed with inoperable Laryngeal Paralysis. The event today was the final crisis distress from the paralysis. With no alternatives that would give him any quality of life back, we made the most humane decision we could muster.

Deacon took his last breath at 2:55 A.M… Deacon was 14 years old.

I have lumber from one of his favorite trees from the back yard. The top section of the white oak. That will be part of his urn…

He is already greatly missed.

Sorry to hear about the loss of you great friend.
I also lost a dog, Zoey a springer spaniel.
She was about 13 or 14 when she died.
Its been about 4 or five years.
We know it would be nice to have another dog just haven't got another one.
After loosing a pet that you are so close to, its not easy to deal with them not being around now.
Warning, as a dog person and a guy who doesn't like to get upset over a movie don't watch that Marley and Me movie for a long time.

I am so sorry to hear this. We really get attached to these guys when they come into our lives and they ask nothing more in return other than to let them give us their love and attention. You made the right decision since Deacon was suffering and I know that it was one of the hardest decisions that you will ever make.

I am very sorry for your loss. I had to put my last dog down due to liver failure and it was very difficult for us to do. I know what its like to lose a best friend and my thoughts are with you.

On another note, I totally agree with Dustdesigns. Marley and Me is a great movie except for the ending. The last movie I cried at was Braveheart lol but Marley and Me made me seriously ball. My wife thought it was cute though so that got me some points ;)

I watched Marley & Me just 2 days ago and it is a great movie although it can easily melt some of us "tough guys".

I lost my 14 year old "baby" just a few months ago, and know the loss. All my warm wishes to you.

Dog lovers will get this, not sure if cats are the same, but…. I have had several dogs over my life. It's a rare thing to have an animal come into your life that is just so special. He was with me through the worst times in my life, and the best. He was one of those dogs that truly defines the old nickname for dogs…. Man's best friend… He made the bad times tolerable, he made the joyful times that much more special.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I have lost several dogs over the years. Some to accidents and the last one we had to put down. It is never easy no matter how it happens. Just know that it was the best choice for a dear friend. At least this way he doesn't have to suffer anymore.

Deacon was 14 years old, pretty old for a lab. My favorite dog Sheena, was put down at 15 years. She lived a good life. I suspect Deacon had a good life as well.

I like the trend for humans that die in their 80's and 90's, what use to be called a funeral is called a celebration of life. My mother's passing was honored in that fashion, she died at 93.

One of the problems with the passing of a pet, there is usually no true event to mark it. We don't do funerals, or celebrations. We bury them, have them put down, cremate them. And silently mourn them. My patients will talk about there pets that die, but it is only once, and the next visit there is no mention. I guess we just don't want to acknowledge how important a pet is to us.

I can't imagine this household without Kermit my 20 year old mitred conure. He may have 5 years left, by averages for the breed. We are now actively talking about getting another bird before he dies.

Maybe building the urn let's you acknowledge to yourself what Deacon meant to you. I hope so, because I have not been able to quite put that part of my life together.

While you work on that urn, remember him young, remember him old. Remember the good times…........

I feel for you brother. Our 13 year old Cocker Charley died 11 years ago and we still miss him like it was yesterday. We have a cat now because we don't feel we can be active enough for a dog, but cats can become loved too.
