Project Information

This bookcase was originally going to have a single door, but after I started it I decided to move and I didn't want to commit to a certain door swing, unsure of what sort of room it might wind up in. I made it a double door but left out the center vertical divider as I find they get in the way of removing books. The passive door locks to the case and the active door locks to the passive door.

As you can see, my house currently suffers from UWS (ugly wallpaper syndrome). Even thought its cureable, its also totally preventable.

Gorgeous bookcase, the glass front always makes these things in my opinion.

I really like your work. This bookcase is great. I am also interested in your finish. How did you do it?

Wow! Beautiful. I've always wanted to build one just like this. How hard was it?

I coloured it with a custom stain I get from Cloverdale and I finished it with shellac. I love shellac, but it was so labour intensive and time consuming I'm going to try some other finishes on my next few pieces. Over all it wasn't that hard, but the size of the pieces was a challenge. It was too big to glue up in my shop so I had to do the glue up and some of the finishing elsewhere.

We are kindred spirits, Jeremy. I too find the Stickley/Craftsman designs very pleasing to the eye, as well as enjoyable to build. Most-but not ALL-of my projects have been ammonia fumed and I really am pleased with the results. Whenever I try to get into stains and tints and gels, I have more trouble.
I'll try to post pictures of a bookcase I built a few years ago that's very similar to yours.
Keep up the good work.
