Project Information

I'm adding another box to my collection of old fence post boxes. I don't know why I'm drawn to these old posts, but when I find them I just want to cut into them and make something new. On this one I was surprised to see that it was redwood , I don't know why redwood in this area makes sense it's rot and insect resent. I guess because it costs so much now.
On this I was trying to show the colors of the stuff on the exterior of the post and the beauty of the aged redwood interior. I think I might have made the side towers a little to tall .

The keys are maple and redwood
The handle is maple and Manzanita root

On the bottom is a stone to cover a knot hole

The finish is satin spray Deft that I tried because Andy says he likes it. I used Deft 20+ yrs. ago. This stuff in a can is great it goes on great and dries fast. I'm now a fan.

Please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Wow! This is so unique…I dont know what to say…but WOW!
What a concept. I agree that the side might be a trifle high, but lets not quibble. This is stunning.
I hope you explore this idea further, its great. The colors/contrasts work perfectly and the finish is spot on. Well done!

I really like this Paul, leaving the raw material and contrasting it with what you've made out of it. Fantastic. It's a unique concept, and you've done a great job with it! Very nice.

That is just too cool !!!

How well does the lichen / moss etc last under the finish?
How do you do all the planing & sanding without destroying the lichen?

I am usually impressed with what I find inside an old log or plank - I never thought to keep the exterior to show the radical difference.

That is very creative. It has alot of artistic qualities to it. I've found redwood to be a nice wood to work with.

Seriously artistic and creative! I think that it's very well executed, and I actually really like the sides. Makes it more interesting, and keeping with the fence roots :)

Well done!

Very interesting box. Very daring combination between the old growth wood (live edge ) and the finished wood. I would have left those "risers" off the already finished sides. It looks added on. I am not being critical of, but for it.
The top looks great on it. Keep the original projects coming.

Your work really excites me. Each piece is a work of art and a unique solution. I love to see aged wood used to create such beautiful objects with such design flare.

New and old, raw and refined all in one very inviting package. It feels to me like this box is telling a story possibly of decay and renewal. A visual experience as well as a textural one for me.

Very nice!

Thank you everyone… after living with the box for the week end I had to modify it a little , I cut the side pieces down on the top. I like it a lot more now.

Paul,

I really love how you've combined the old and the new. Could you possibly elaborate on how you transition from the old and the new, like on the lid, and maybe add a pic that shows more of the top? I am also intrigued with how the old even wraps around the front edge. I'm guessing that came from a corner of the post. Very nice design

Question!!!!
What do you use to preserve the bark?
Do you seal it or poly it?

I love this look too and want to keep bark on some of my limb boxes
but didn't what to use to seal it or leave it alone??
