Project Information

I decided to try something a little different with the finish on this one, so I think some people are going to love it and others will hate it. All of my carvings so far have been stained all one color, so I thought I'd try to use the stain kind of like paint this time. I used different shades to help bring out the different elements and make it look almost like a picture. I mixed stain (in Cherry and Walnut) with poly to get the variation in shade….so all the colors you see on this came from only those 2 stain colors. The poly gives it the shine, because without it I think alot of the detail in the carving gets lost.

Anyway, any feedback positive or negative is welcome and appreciated. I've only been carving for a little over a year now, and the only way I feel I'm going to improve (besides the improvement that comes with experience) is to go by the feedback from you guys.

Thanks for looking! : )

I'm a sucker for anything canine…can't carve a lick myself, so I think it looks complicated and well done!

looks great!

The borders and tree are excellent, I do know how much time it takes to do relief work like that, the different staining helps to bring out the different elements of the piece too.

Beautiful carving!

Thanks,

Jim

Nice carving. I like the different stains as well. Just like Dusty said, the different stains I think make parts of the carving stand out.

Wow, that is sweet! I can't carve a dang thing, so I'm doubly impressed. I also really like the different stains-it really makes this piece pop. To be honest, I rarely click on carvings because I don't know enough about it to learn from them, but I coudn't resist checking this one out. Very, very cool.

Thank you to all for the kind remarks. It's kind of goofy, but for some reason I always feel a little nervous to check back and see the comments after I post. I don't know why, because everyone is normally so nice! : )

I really like all the details you put into this.

(By the way, we are even more nice to the ladies around here because we are for the most part a bunch of slobbering old married guys well-versed in the art of kissing up to the opposite sex. So you REALLY have nothing to worry about when you come back to read the comments.)

Kissing up to the ladies is GOOD Charlie, (we absolutely love it…there's no doubt about it, lol!). But I also don't want to see "Great job…BEAUTIFUL carving!" if the viewer really doesn't feel it's that great ONLY because I'm a woman. I don't want any pats on the back that I don't deserve is all I'm saying, so I just hope for honesty.

Now that I've said that, I hope I didn't just invite someone to rip into me! HAHAHA!

Great great job you do very nice work.
I am not saying that because you're a girl, the work is nice and I love it and I like seeing the work that girls do too.
Sorry if I use great!!

I thought the carving looked good when you first posted it, but the different color really makes it complete. It really brings out the detail.

My comments on your first post stay and it is good to see you experimenting with different colored stains and this has made it a complete finished project. No need to be nervous about reading comments here, even as Charlie above says us old married guys do a bit of kissing and sucking up to the ladies but the majority of comments as mine are on your ability as a carver. I have incorporated paints and wood dyes into some of my carvings, maybe you could try that later on.

Ditto Charlie…. it is never good to argue with SHMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed)

You may win but you still lose. Women hold grudges.

Nice work. The different colors bring out the details. Keith needs to watch his tools and maybe his back. lol

Well, I definetly haven't seen anyone say they hate it, that should tell you something. But I love it! I think the different colors look fantastic, especially the acorns. And you did do a great job here!
