Project Information

Knowing that my dad was soon going to move in with us last winter so we could take care of his health, I needed to completely gut the bedroom. The house is all an brick exterior. The room is about 11'x12' with oak flooring. After gutting other rooms in the house I found that when it was built the outside sheathing did not go to the top of the wall. Leaving about 10" across the whole wall of outside air to hit the insulation, that at the time was only 1 1/2" thick, 1955. Knowing that he was not going to be with us long (Unfortunately) My plans for the renovation would be thinking of the future use of the room, or what my wife would like it to be. You know how that goes!! So this is what I did…

I repaired the sheathing then caulked all spaces that air could infiltrate. I installed R15 insulation on the outside walls and R13 no VB on the interior walls (Sound Proofing), two new windows, changed the closet door from a solid door to a bi-fold to save space when the door is opened and increased the size from 24" to 30". What a difference that makes. New entry door (solid pine), all new electric, new baseboard heat, ceiling can lights. Installed the wiring for the wall mounted 32" LCD TV (for dad to watch his NY Giants) in the wall so the dvd and cable box can be mounted on the side wall in a future project cabinet. 1/2 sheetrock. I had to change the flooring because the squeaking it made was horrible. I found out why when I lifted it up. On a 5' board it was only nailed 3 times and and less for smaller boards. So I put down a pre-finished oak with a Brazilian Koa border. My only problem was I used two different brand floors, that meant two different thicknesses. So I had to build up with roofing paper the Koa and re-cut the tongue and grooves to fit. Boy what a lesson learned. My aching knees!!. I posted some old and new pictures and some are the same view so you can see the difference.

We finished the room using the Benjamin Moore Aura paint. The color in the picture is not right, it's kinda like a chocolate brown with an off white trim. The room came out great and last spring dad moved in. He loved the room especially the floor. Not to mention the TV. Dad was with us for only 6 short months and died on Nov. 21, 2009 (my birthday). My family and I were blessed to have him with us. We had a good time each other. I would do it all over again if I had to. It was a huge loss for us and we still miss him. Now I was promised that at the end of the summer when I finish installing the new patio I can Overhaul my shop finally. Then I can make the projects that I have backed up.

Nice job! I install, sand, and fiinish wood floors for a living and I say it looks great. I'm sure your dad appreciated the love that went into the project.

Thanks for the kind words. My camera doesn't have a wide angle so it's hard to get a good picture in a small room. The floor is nice and quiet now. Yes, dad loved the room and the work that went into it. We had fun going over how and why I did it the way I did.
