Project Information
The dresser belonged to my grandmother and was passed down to my sister when she passed and now was given to my daughter wen she was born 9 months ago. It was made fairly sturdy (even dovetail drawers) and due to the history we felt it was worth fixing up.
The dresser is part refinish part redo. The whole piece was a brown color (see foot picture) with brass hardware, not quite our style. .The drawers sides and front were stripped of the finish, sanded and oiled. Luckily when I sanded it I found there was a cherry veneer with great grain underneath(drawer fronts and sides) much different than the finish that was on it. Some of the areas were poplar though. The top had to be replaced, some 40/50's plastic laminate creation, and the feet did not fit our style.
The top is 8/4 cherry and the legs are cherry stained poplar to match what was existing. It isn't perfect but I am pleased with the work.
Now I have to wait for the new cherry top to darken and match the veneer which is 50-60 years old.
