Heart shaped box for my wife for our anniversary, Feb 15th. Started thinking about making her something the Sunday before, had to have it ready by Thursday, we were going out of town for the weekend and it had to be done. Really love Andy's boxes with the contours and gentle curves and was thinking of trying one of those. Took out all the hardwood scraps I have been saving and stared at them on my bench for a long time, started drawing a heart and this is what came out. Didn't have any nice figured maple or enough to glue up for a band saw box so I segmented the shape of the heart and glued it up. Took allot of sanding and shaping and sanding and shaping….and did I mention sanding. Used blood wood for the top and bottom. Wanted it to be rounded like a heart so had to make the walls thicker, top of the walls are about 1/2 in, bottom is about 1/4 in. Barrel hinges were last minute idea, was going to have the top just sit on top with an inset, so it worked out well that the sides were thicker. Used spray lacquer, about 6 coats, tried semi gloss, I liked the look better wet then when it dried so did last few coats in glossy.
