Project Information

I saw it in a magazine and thought it looked pretty. I also thought it looked simple. It was not complicated, it was tricky but it was fun. Basswood and about 3 hours of work so far, maybe I'll sand it a bit and add a color to it.. then in 102 days someone will probably hang it from a green tree :)

The other bit of wood in the back right is a copy of http://lumberjocks.com/projects/1114 JTRid43's chimney and Santa's feet, well it is a start at least.

Looks extremely tedious to me snowdog and you did a really fantastic job. A close-up shot would be great. Thanks for posting this.

Here are two more pics, a little closer :). Yes it was a little tedious but it also gave me a good understanding of how to do this type of carving. I bet the next one will take a lot less time.
I get to sit on lots of conference calls all day long, so I put a lap top in the shop and a speaker phone. It may have been tedious but no where near as bad as the suits I have to listen to all day long <laugh>

Here is how it is done:
Cut 1×1x6 or longer if you want something on the top (face , head Christmas tree)
Cut that length wise into the triangle (icicale) shape (at teh square end 1×1 lark centers and draw lines length wise)
Then every 1/2" make a mark down the long sides (both sides of each face)
Connect the marks at an angle creating the spiral shape (ste[ the lines a 1/2" down on each face)
Cut away the corners, (starting to shape it round)
After you remove the corners, plow out the line on each face.
Rinse and repeat until you have the shape you want.

Great job. And it doesn't make noises on the speaker phone.

I can't figure how you got your sawsall in to all those tight little spots….
or did you just use a grinder?

hmmm, i was just glancing at this again and thought, perhaps it would be easily hide-able/incorporated into the design and save a lot of time if you drilled stepped holes from the solid block end? what do you guys think? shoot I think if I made it a little bigger it would be a snap with my lancelot attachment on the grinder =)

Could be but that would take all the fun out of it. I enjoyed the time it took and the gentle carving away of the wood. I should do another now that I am retiring on April 3 2009 but I'll write on that more another time.
