Project Information
I enjoy making unique things. I thought it would be fun to make a wall clock that looks like a wrist watch. I have searched for years (my projects take time to develop) to find a pattern to follow. Not having any success I designed one myself. This clock is made of one (long) piece of cherry wood. With handling each piece multiple times as I worked on them, it took some doing to get all the pieces in the right place so the grain still matched up in the end. I didn't want the grain to just go in one direction on the dial ring so I glued four pieces of wood and glued together. After using my band saw to form a circle I used my router table to establish the inside ring as well as the inset for the dial to rest in. I used the very inside of that ring to make the knob on the right side of the clock. The knob does turn but has no practical function.
The pieces are linked together by dowel rods and the joints do function including the buckle tung. The clock face was square so I had to cut it into a round face to get it to fit into my design. I added a barometer, hygrometer, temperature gage as well as a tide clock since the gift is now in the Seattle area. The clock has 6 chimes so its very melodic as well. I used tung oil to finish it.
I have built all my sisters kids clocks for their wedding and the final one was getting married this year so I had to step it up to get this project done in less than a year. My wife says thats a record for me! I tell her creativity just takes longer!
It was a fun project and I assured my nephew that if he didn't like it we would be happy to leave it on our wall but he opted to accept it and after deciding that he couldn't figure out how to get it into his suit case we shipped it to him.
My camera decided to change the background color of the wall but hopefully you will be looking at the clock and not the wall.
Also partically illustrated is a family plaque that I made many years ago.
