Project Information
These are some Jr. Statesman pens that I made a year or so ago. I had turned perhaps only a dozen or so other pens of various styles so I was relatively new to turning. I was a little hesitant spending the extra money on these somewhat pricey kits but after turning these, I'm hooked on this style or the larger Statesman from Craft Supplies USA. I don't recall exactly which woods I used, but the two "burl" ones are stabilized. Stabilized blanks are great to work with, but go slow. If you find a void in the blank as you are turning it down, add a drop of CA glue and let it harden for a minute (or hit it with an accelerator) before continuing.
These were sanded up to 600 grit with sandpaper, then with 0000 steel wool, and then polished with flannel wheels with polishing compound (2 wheels with different compounds called the Artisan System from Craft Supplies also). I now use micromesh and go to 12,000 grit, then polish with the flannel wheels and use Renaissance wax to get a glass-like finish.
