Project Information

Here is the blog for this build.

Finally finished and in the mail. 34 lbs with packing materials.

This case was quite a build. I really should have drawn up full plans before starting. I was using a jewelry case from one of Doug Stowe's books for inspiration. I made it a bit more "mission." Using his book was fun as it gave general dimensions and loose steps but really left the "plan" up to the builder.

The hanging spinner was fun to figure out. However, by not having drawn everythin out before cutting, I ended up with several holes in the back where necklaces hanging from the spinner would get caught on. The spinners also interfered with the catches. I would have preferred the bullet style catches but by that point I had everything stained/varnished and needed to mail when realizing that there was not enough of a gap to allow for the bullet style catches. So the ugly magnet catches it was to be.

The ring bar I ended up making too. Took some hints from here and glued some 1" high density foam to a piece of card stock (foam dense enough for seating). Then ran that through the tablesaw to make the kerfs. Covered that with velvet. I only glued the ends - not the velvet down in each kerf.

Very nice. I like the way you did the drawer pulls. So for the ring bar, it is the high desity foam that you ran through the saw?

The drawer pulls were taken from Doug Stowe. I glued the foam to a piece of poster-board. Then I ran the blade through about 85% of the foam with the poster-board on the top. Had to make sure I didn't push down on the foam too hard and end up running the blade through the foam and poster-board backing!
