Project Information

This is a humidor I made as a Christmas gift for my father. I used a piece of Black Walnut for the body with maple splines. The top was made using a bookmatched piece of curly walnut with curly maple around the edges. I used quarter inch Spanish cedar for the bottom and to line the sides as well as the top.
The main body is of basic miter construction. I used one continuous piece of walnut so the grain would match going around the body of the box. This was a project full of firsts for me. This was my first try at using splines and a spline jig. This was also my first attempt at cutting the top off of the box after glue up using the tablesaw. I goofed up a bit when cutting the top off. Many thanks goes out to the Lumberjocks community for their help and support on turning my goof in to a "design enhancement." I finished the project off with about six coats of a glossy polyurethane. Added a pair of hinges and a hydrometer and called it complete. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Really nice box. You covered your mistake, whatever it was, real well too. Nice combo of woods. I've been too cheap to try those hinges, and have used chain… I need to try them, they look nice.

great job, how did u find working the spline jig easy or a bit scary? also how did u go about seting the blade hight to get the depth for the splines?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I can't wait till Christmas to get here so I can give it to him.

Bigike: As this was my first attempt at splines I was a bit nervous (ok, really nervous). I tried it out on a small test box I made out of some scrap pine. All went well so to get the height I just moved my fence out of the way and placed the box at the end of my jig and set the whole thing next to my saw blade. I then just raised my blade up to a height that was just shy of going all the way through. There might be a better more mathematical way but all that math stuff requires way to much thinking. Thinking gives me a headache so I just eyeballed it.

Richard, Nice Job! I enjoy a nice cigar every now and then, and there is nothing better than opening your own (very nice) humidor and selecting your next smoke. Your father will love it.
