Project Information

This box is another in my series of presentation wine boxes. The top acts as a latch just like the wooden wine bottle. It is made of cherry and maple with the top being cedar. There are numerous pieces of cedar that make up that top. Upon completion I had second thoughts about using the cedar on top. What do you think?

Very Impressive! If you had not raised the question about the cedar it would have never crossed my mind. Seems to me that I hae seen lighthouses with red roofs and that is pretty close! It would be interesting to see one with a walnut top as well.

This is amazing! I like the cedar. How hard was this to make? Above my level! Nice gift for someone to give!

Thanks for the compliments guys, I really appreciate your input. Sras, I had actually started making that roof with walnut but at the time wanted a little more contrast. I may do another top, this one with walnut and see the difference. The basic box is pretty simple to make. It is 8 sided so 22 1/2 degree cuts on the corners and glue it up. You need to draw it out full scale in order to determine the length of the sides however in relation to the final interior dimension you are trying to achieve. I find it near impossible to achieve perfect miters on all corners, that is why I generally cut and insert pieces there. A contrasting wood also helps define them. Working for the fun of it!!

Very cool and it's good to have a beacon to help locate your wine bottle. I think the Cedar looks great. Warm and inviting.

You certainly have a crative mind! That is so very imaginative and elegant! If you have any friends who are getting married, or some other real special occasion, that would certainly make a wonderful gift!
