Project Information

This wall was perfect for a window seat and built in bookcases in my son's new room. The idea came from from a Kreg Jig video and a Workbench magazine cover. The floor vent had to be moved about 1 foot away from the wall, also a wall socket on the left side wall had to be moved 16". Carpet was pulled back about halfway across the room, side wall base was trimmed with a dremel before removing. 4 main cases consist of 2 upper bookcases & 2 lower cabinets using allot of pocket hole screws. The seat portion & soffit were built as panels. The addition of mouldings dresses things up a bit. Someone told me to go big with the edge molding but I did not want it to be too fancy in a bedroom, so excluded it on the panels. Primary materials are maple plywood & popular 1x. A little extra wood was designed in that was scribed to walls. Crown moulding always looks good, and the soffit offset adds interest. My favorite detail is the beading around the shelf. These were primed with BIN, (rolled on) and sprayed with Sherwin Williams Classic enamal paint using HVLP (challenging). Reinstalling the carpet was the most difficult part of the whole project. Plan to have someone sew up flat cushions. Time frame: 6 weeks worth of nights & weekends. Thanks for all your comments.

Nice but I don't think it will take long for your son to outgrow his new bunkbed. LOL

This looks amazing! This is exactly what I want to do in my son's room. What did you do about the ac vent & the carpet? It looks exactly like the window I have. My main challenge is going to be the ac vent; it comes out in the ceiling right where the left bookshelf/cabinet would be, so it would need to be moved. Did you remove the carpet or build on top of it and bolt it to the wall? I would like to do it without removing the carpet but I have heard to do it right it needs to be removed.

Beautiful work! Any clue how many hours it took to build all that?

JNelson: I did a ton of tile work in my last house. Removing carpet is quite easy and just requires a utility knife and prybar (for the tack strips). You would want to check your floor for level before building cabinets on top of it.

Beautiful work. It looks like you sprayed it in place. I especially like that last pic. He'll really appreciate all your work in a few more years
