It has been quite some time since I developed these new routing techniques

Routing with the aid of template guides will enable the user to produce a greater number of projects and also introduce greater safety awareness with the use of the router. I have recently managed to master the posting of videos to You Tube some may be of interest to some members

thank you , tom .

i use guides and jigs whenever possible ,
as they make precise and repeatable routing .
and are much safer than freehand .

thanks for teaching ,
and sharing !

Thank you David for your comments I would be interested in seeing what you produce with the aid of the guides

Tom,
Thank you for the videos on you tube. I'm rewatching them to be sure I learn enough to ask an intellegent question.
Also I am building my first router table and since I am confined to a wheelchair and you have the experience of helping the handicaped, any input in the design would be most welcome.
And to Mario, Thank you for pointing this blog out to me. You are OK, I don't care what they say about you!
Hire the handicapped, 'cause we're fun to watch.
You LJer's said this was a great place to learn, but you didn't tell the half of it.

Where do I begin

First the material I have posted on You Tube was a series of videos I had prepared before going to the wood show, to show others what really can be achieved with the router with the aid of the guides. I suppose what really has to be explained is 'Why I use Template Guides'.

Template guides will introduce greater safety awareness with the use of the router. It will also introduce projects that you may consider not suitable of producing with the router. It will also a add a greater interest in what the router is capable of doing; adding greater enjoyment producing Jigs and Templates. I would have over 100 jigs I have constructed over the years from making Dining room chairs to inserting say 'Soss' hinges just to mention a couple.

When we think of what we want to achieve we must consider SAFETY at all times we hear about many accidents with the router when it is used in the Router Table and very little when used in the Plunge Mode.

I need some help here from members re: how would I do ?................ I could put up a number of projects that would not be of interest to members but was to me as I required to produce the article. If you feel you could fill in the blank please do. I also need some advice on how to submit photographs from my computer.

If I were to start with a simple project Rectangular Picture Frame to introduce the technique would that do? This will involve setting up a piece of solid timber and routing the internal opening with a rebate for the glass and a moulding on the internal edge. Then I would like to introduce you to my method of routing the external edging without placing the router in the router table

Routing with Tom O'Donnell

Experiment to post Video to explain why I have had great success with the use of the template guides.

This is an opportunity to show the advantages of the guides so when I present a topic I will have the oportunity to follow it up with the video.

I had posted the two small tables that I had constructed for our church, very small only 200mm high to take a vase of flowers I will go back and see if I can get the video and post it here.

This video is here to introduce Template Tom and show some of the material I have produced with the aid of the guides. Also some of the projects were constructed by my 'Students' (35-82year olds) when I was teaching at the Association for the blind.

The reason for making this presentaion is to inform/instruct members on the use of the guides a method that will also introduce greater safety awareness when using the router There is no great expense with regards to Jigs and templates as you are able to construct your own once you have mastered the use of the guides.

There are hundreds of processes that is best completed with the router in the plunge mode or should I simple say by getting the router out from under the table some times. (I have three routers inserted permanently in the table mode as there are processes that require the use of the table mode.) Some router experts say that "90% of all routing processes can be achieved with the router in the table mode. I dispute this statement due to the fact they have never taken the time to investigate the use of the template guides to their full potential and I can submit a great number processes where it is safer to use the guides.

If you have any questions please ask as I may be able to answer them.

When you have viewed the video you will hopefully consider the purchase of the template guides.

Note: Most sets of guides are lacking a large diameter guide which in my opinion is very important.

I look forward to any comments you may like to make.
Tom

This is an interesting video. I had always tried to get the guide to be as close to the bit size as possible so that my jigs openings didn't need to be so large. This gives me an entirely different perspective. Thanks!!
