Project Information

Completed Aug. 10 2007.

This is a platform bed that I custom built for a customer. It is based off a design that I usually order in from a supplier, so I don't normally build this style. The wanted it in a king size, which is not very common in platform beds. They also wanted a special color and for it to hold a soft side waterbed. So this was that I had to build.

Features:
Maple wood construction
King Size
Extra support in center to support a waterbed mattress.
Custom color with glaze coat.

To accomidate the waterbed mattress I added a solid sheet of 3/4" MDF over the slats. I also added a continous leg in the center that ran from the the head to about 12" from the foot. This leg gave the center some support and took a little weight off the post. The customer didn't want the legs to leave an impression in the carpet, so I made the footprint a little wider by making add a piece of 3/4 plywood to the bottom of the leg about 6" wide and the full length of the leg.

I matched the color to a small box that the customer brought in. It was a red that was very hard to match. I ended up using the technique used on the Federal Style Display Cabinet that I built a couple months ago. The color turned out perfect.

Chris,

Great looking bed!

It's always great viewing your posts because of the detailed construction analysis, which you always include. This helps us non-professionals greatly.

Thanks a lot for sharing your work and process with us!

Nice job Chris. I like the color and the design of the bed.

Do platform beds sell well? To me it would make sense, since you only have to buy a mattress and not a box spring as well. But, I wonder if people are more tradition bound and think they need both? My guess is some people still like the regular beds, as they may be easier to get out of in the morning (the extra height making it easier to stand up). But, that is just a thought. Being our resident bed expert, I am sure you know better than I do.

The platform bed has become real popular lately. I don't build a lot of them. Most of the time the customer will order form one of my suppliers. Yes, a lot of people can't break from thinking they need a box spring. The orginal bed that I designed off of had bentwood slats. The slats were laminated in a from to have a bow. There were two rows, about 30 slats in all. This acted as a spring foundation. Kia actually sells these types of slats.
