Project Information

Hi all. Its been awhile since I posted and thought I would get at least one done tonight. Made this one a few weeks back after I got back from R&R. Used some of the same old wood that I found lying on the ground here…its full of checks and cracks, so I had to use a lot of superglue and wood dust to keep it together. Finished with tung oil.

Isn't it fun to take a piece of "fire" wood and create something. Super glue sure helps.
Nice grain in the bowl. Be sure to sign and date the bottom (-;

I don't know what your experience is but I have some suggestions that might help.
A functional problem in design is the small rim you left on the bottom. It will probably make the bowl unstable.
I saw this on your other bowl and in the future I would suggest either cutting/sanding it off or leave it wider. If you make it wider you can still have a small under cut near the edge to give the bowl a "floating" look.
The view of the bottom of your bowl leads me to believe you are using a lathe chuck. If you are using a chuck and clamping from the outside of the rim you might think of reversing and using the inside recess instead. Make some decorative rings or what ever in the center area with just enough room for the chuck jaws to fit in.
If you have a router available you can make the "inside" rim with the router and a circle template right on the raw blank wood. I usually start on what will be the inside. Then completely turn the bottom making a new countersunk "inside" rim. Rotate the piece around and mount on this new rim and turn the inside. Be sure to completely finish the bottom before you turn it over because you can't remount it for more bottom work. This can method be accomplished other ways if you don't have a router….

LesB,

Good point. This was the last bowl I left that foot on. I started turning a slight concve on the bottom after this one…much more stable now. I was using a chuck and have bowl jaws for it. It is simple enough to turn the bottom totally off. No router, though. I am in Iraq and my "woodshop" is out back of my Battalion HQ. Other than the lathe, and a rechargeable flashligh, all I have is hand tools stored in a footlocker. Will keep the router idea in mind when I get home, though.

Loucarb and Scrappy,

Thanks for the kind words.

Eric
