Project Information
Dear friends,
According to my announced expectations, I have just accomplished my Rococo-style Chest of Drawers especially built to serve as the supporting piece for the rococo upper cabinet (my first project posted on this page). On my previous post (July 2009) I described some details of its construction. By that time there existed only the top board connected to the frontal face (the front legs plus the front boards for the future drawers).
In the sequence, I carved the back legs, the side panels (concave and convex shapes) composed by three thick planks glued side by side, and another fourth plank with a carved scroll (the lower one) which was used to connect the front leg to the back one. An important building detail is that only the middle seccion of the side panel is firmly glued between the front leg and the back one in order to allow the previsible expansion/contraccion in its width caused by the atmosferical changes.
Continuing on, I made the four drawers and their sliding rails, all made or solid rosewood too.
It took exactly one year to be completed (normally I would spend about 3 years…)
Dimensions: 35 inch high x 30 inch wide x 19 inch deep
This piece was completely conceived, drawn and hand carved by me, according to my personal interpretation of the Portuguese style "Dom Jose I" (Baroque + Rococo styles). Only hand tools were used.
REMARK: I will post photos of the whole "two-bodied cabinet" very soon.
Regards,
