Project Information

I made this Craftsman style wall clock for my daughters upcoming wedding. I blogged about here if you would like to see the progress from the start. http://lumberjocks.com/Timbo/blog/series/2005
I used Quarter sawn white oak, finished with Transtint medium brown dye and Shellac. Because I was on the fence about using a quartz movement, I made dial removable and the door open so later a mechanical movement could be installed with minimal fit up.

Great Job.
But being "old school" on clocks I vote for a mechanical movement….before it leaves your shop. One with a hour half hour strike action would be great. Keep the quartz movement as a backup when the mechanical movement wears out in about 50 years.
Try Merritt's Antiques for a movement. They sell all kinds of new clock works and parts. On the internet.

Plenty of detail on this piece, great eye candy. QSWO and its flecking is a favorite of mine. This should get plenty of rave reviews and year of enjoyment. Nice work all around…Blkcherry

Hey Timbo, I was not happy with my quartz movement/pendulum purchase for my clock. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Les B- Believe me I considered a mechanical movement and reluctantly chose the quarts, it is a Hermle but still not a mechanical. The deciding factor was (after some discussions) I think the chances are greater the batteries will get changed once a year than winding the movement every week. Also the fact that I can upgrade it to a mechanical movement later.

You are correct on winding thing. There are some that only need to be wound once a month.
I enjoy doing it but not everyone does. My favorites are weight driven clocks so you can actually see that they need winding as the weight reaches the bottom.
I also like hearing them "tic toc". Sort of like being back in the womb and hearing your mother's heart beat (-; There are some quartz movements that simulate the tic toc sound.

The other thing with mechanical movments is they need to be cleaned and oiled every few years for a long life. I usually do mine about every 3 years using a special clock oil.

Les, I agree with you on the mechanical movement, the "tic toc" is a comforting sound, and I enjoy the Sunday morning ritual of winding our grandfather clock. The movement is way overdue for cleaning, maybe I will do that this weekend, thanks for the reminder.
