Project Information
This project was a Christmas gift for a friend last year. When I learned he still had the McCoy 29 "Red Head" engine from his Dad's model airplane, I thought he might enjoy proudly displaying the engine on his desk at work or credenza.
I had a couple small pieces of a burl from the knot of a tree that fell after a storm years ago. It was a beautiful grain pattern but the pieces I saved were rough and hole-y. I filled the wood with clear epoxy and then cut all the pieces to shape and sanded. Since I wasn't able to measure the engine dimensions, a little research on the www was required to size the engine mounting arms. The wood for the back and arms is mesquite. I used tung oil for the finish … it looks a bit like a lazy boy recliner for a small engine.
As far as I know, I must have been more interested in this idea than he was, as he hasn't mounted the engine yet and the engine lazy boy probably sits in a drawer somewhere. But, it gave me some satisfaction expressing interest in a friend's relationship with his Dad and a hobby they shared years ago.
