Project Information
This started as a branch of about 4" diameter, about 2-1/2' long, with a roughly 3" branch sticking perpendicularly out of the middle. I took the branch to the table saw and extracted the middle therefrom, leaving me a chunk of Cape Chestnut about 5" long with a 3" branch stub (healed over) sticking out of the middle. This means I'd have some end-turning and some side-grain-turning in one and the same piece. How exciting is that?
How did this happen, you ask? Pull up a chair and I'll tell you the tale.
I'm sitting at my computer in the middle of the night. last night - Wednesday, watching one of Brother Al's (Furtado) videos. Al's doing what Al does. He's working on a wacky piece of wood and doing something awesome with it. I find myownbadself inspired. Not by what he's turning, exactly, but by the shape of what he's turning. I think of the branch with the branch stump. The table saw part, you know . The next part goes that I mounted it 'tween centers and picked up my nice, sharp Ellsworth gouge and began.
Note about the middle of the night: It's dark in here in the middle of the night. I've yet to figure out a good way to mount a lamp to the new lathe, so, I'm pretty much working in the dark - the only light being behind me as I stand at the lathe. Nonetheless, I turned the outside down to a pot shape, which, at this point, could've culminated in either a pot or a vase, depending on how I treated the innards. (It's a pot. A small pot - 4" tall X 2-1/4" at the bottom, with about a 3/16" wall that's remarkably consistent.) The finishing of the outside I did today - in the daylight. The finish is Shine Juice and straight shellac. The inside I hollowed out, also, today - in the daylight, using a combination of my nice, sharp 3/8" spindle gouge, a round Sorby carbide, and another carbide tool. I would've used a right-and-proper hollowing tool, but I don't have one, yet. There's one on the way in a day or two, but I coudn't wait.
I did what I could, in the dark, and left it.
And then, I finished it on Thursday. I may decide to blow some Lacquer on it.
Now, I'm in the 2:00AM hour, Friday. I've been having computer fits for several hours. I tarted trying to post this at about 10:00 last night. Finally, it seems to be working. The thing (LJ's) would take forever to load a photo, then, in the midst of loading the second photo, it would lock up. About five times, I tried. Now, I've got in in here, and I'm ready to push the "post" button. Let's see if it works, shall we?
Oh. Also, the house's AC went on the fritz last night. We're expecting 108 F degrees Friday.
Wait here a minute. I'm trying to pull up a little something to play us out on YT. It's taking forever to load…
Here we go
Thank you. And, I apologize.
