Project Information

I built my 7 year old son this toolbox for Christmas last year. I used hand tools for all the joinery and enjoyed this project very much. I am doing more skill building projects these days. The #3 Bailey plane and the #151 spoke shave I found at yard sales and refinished them as they were rust balls when I found them. The box is joined with hand cut dovetails. The door and back are raised panels I did with a 4 1/2 hand plane. The stiles and rails are haunched mortise and tenons and the panel groove was cut with a #49 tongue and groove plane. It took a few weeks to finish this project. Could have done it in a day with power tools. The finish is milk paint. Also a first with milk paint.

Very nice, are the corners of the toolbox box joints or dovetails?

Great to see you developing hand tool skills. This is a lovely chest and I particularly like the contrast between the interior natural color and the Milk Paint finish - very nice work.

The essence of woodworking is the handtools….I still like my horsepower but it's the handtool work that makes me love woodworking. I need to start going to more flea markets..

Great Toolbox…you have a very lucky son.

Nice job Brent. I like the idea of hand tools to, but I find them hard on the joints (my joints). So many years of working on the computer that my elbows just ache when I have to do much hand sanding. I can not imagine building something by hand like you did. I would be out of commission for weeks.
