Project Information

My daughter loves penguins so I made this for her 50th birthday. . We found this picture in old San Diego 2 week ago so I bought a piece of pistachio for the frame. It was pretty warped and had many cracks so I had to carefully cut it so I could capture some sap wood in each piece. The left frame member did not come out with any on the front but I used it anyway because the rest of the board was too cracked to make one more piece. This is 60+ yr old wood

It is 1×11x15 and finished with Danish oil and satin lacquer.

Cheers, Jim

It's still a beauty Jim. I see what you were after. Too bad you couldn't use the back.
I see the picture change as you angle the frame. COOL.

Jim….Beautiful frame from beautiful old wood that was eventually transformed into a work of art.

Terrific Pictures of Penguins too….I can understand why your daughter loves them.

Lots of Character in that Pistachio. The Danish Oil and Satin Lacquer really brings out the long swirling and colours.

Would Pistachio respond to burning and wire brushing and then Danish Oil?

Regards,

Cliff.

Thank you for all the nice comments. This sure was a heavy frame. I see that I got too much reflection form shooting it outside on the deck. It is shipped so I cannot redo it.

Hi Doug, You are right. Now that I can't use rosewood, this is now my favorite only it is getting hard to find nice pieces without cracks. This piece was warped over an inch and the sap wood was pure powder for most of the board. It too a lot of surgical cutting to get these 4 pieces..

Hi Brian. I like to see you goblet and I love making them here for people..

Hi Cliff. The Danish oil works great on burned wood areas, but do not use it on oil based painted areas. I learned that the hard way.

Hi Candy. Those dots are holes drilled in at an angle for hanging the frame any way. I just did that out of habit.

Cheers, Jim
