A simple box, mitered corners, poplar splines and walnut top.

The mahogany started life as crown moulding. I liked the profile and decided to see if I could make a quick box out of it. The moulding was probably 6 inches or so tall so I ripped it to around 4 inches, keeping the profile and taking off the bottom. After the box was done I wanted to continue the lines up around the top. I decided a smaller top with a rounded profile might carry the lines.

I guess it turned out ok, I took it to work and co-worker wanted it for his lady friend's birthday. This and another box will be the first of the great swap experiment.

Nicely done.
I, too, have taken to doing the very same thing(well, not the VERY same thing)with scraps of left over trim. Initially I was just making little boxes for my girl's to put their "whatever-little-girls-put-in-boxes stuff" into, but then jr. saw them (the boxes) and then wanted his own…snowball affect happening… great gifts…
