Project Information

I've borrowed from various periods in designing this table, incorporating basicaly all the shapes my mind is comfortable with. So there is no true point of origin. I think it may tend to reflect some of the intricacies I've noticed in Federalist style furniture, hence the naming of it! Constructed of Brazilian Cherry and White Oak primarily. The capped ball feet are actually birch. There's not a tool in the shop that I didn't use during this build except the pin nailer. The only metal is the figure eight fasteners and screws for the top.Everything else is mortise/tenon and inlayed. I particularly enjoyed getting to use the scrollsaw for the 3/d oak drawer pulls and the caps on the ball feet. The finish is comprised of many coats of tung oil and top coated with a blend of tung oil/MS/Varnish.

Ken, I'm ordinarily very much against adultery, but I'll make an exception in this case. :)

This is truly a fine accomplishment. The details and craftsmanship are just outstanding! (And the corners look pretty square as well.) Congratulations on a job well done, my friend. You've raised the bar for me now.

This is a beautiful table, Ken. Quite a departure from the Arts and Crafts, although you can never get away from the white oak. You used all of your tools and probably all of your different skills to get this one done. Thanks for the post.

Cool design and a great build. It looks Federal from the first picture, but I love all the unique touches that truly make it one of a kind. Thanks for sharing.

That's a fantastic table you made there. I agree with Charlie, you have raised the bar for me as well. GREAT job. I really like the inlay accents, it makes it a great piece for me including the feet as well

a1Jim, Ty, Sir. CharlieM1958, Ty for the compliment, I really don't feel I've raised any bar for you, especially since I was trying to keep the feet for the table square like the corners of your boxes, and after several failed attempts I just rounded them up on the lathe! Derrek LeRouax, Ty very much. Loucarb, Ty very much for taking the time to reply, my little carvings don't start to compare to the Ball and Claw feet you completed not to long ago. tenontim, thanks friend for the review, Yeppers a little away from Arts and Craft, but I still had to mortise and tenon some! Karson, Ty, yeah I thought it was heavily inspired by the federalist things I'd seen. huff, the design just evolved into what I wanted after the legs were inlayed on all four sides instead of just two which I had seen on other tables. In other words the plans are all on two napkins-LOL. mtnwild, TY very much, you're right, the whole intent was to make it like I wanted. I just can't get into building from a lot of plans some one else created, my skills wont allow that to happen generally. Ben Kahmann, Ty for your kind remarks, don't tell CarlieM1958 too much about the feet, since they're round it offends his sensibilities. He's a square kinda guy! All kidding aside I enjoyed the feet and the caps for them the most, maybe because they were the absolute last things I added and it signaled the end of this project. Thanks again to all of you who've taken the time away from your own special projects, just to keep me inspired and moving on.

Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis

Me, a square guy? You should have known me in the 70's. :)

CharlieM1958,
I was thinking I did know you in the 70's. You were the kid walking on my hair from the 60's. While I danced in open fields and meadows with my long hair and tie dyed shirts, you aspired to reach for the lights on the disco floor in your polyester clothes. I'd tell more of our journeys, however I have a grandchild tugging on my shoulder and have to go now!

Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis

woodsman, Ty very much for the kind words. coloradoclimber, I appreciate your comment more than you know. I always feel anxious about the recpetiveness of a piece, when I just build on the fly. The finished piece is really more like a writing desk than I had originally envisioned. The fact that it would work well in some one elses home is most gratifying. roman, Ty I think? Gentlemen, I do appreciate your comments and the time you took to respond immensely.

Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis
