Project Information

Spring 2017 my uncle brought me some Cherry and Black Walnut that he had harvested on his farm around 1995. It was sawn on his saw mill and stacked in a barn loft for the past 20 years. Upon receiving this generous gift, I had the idea to use the wood for Christmas presents for the family.

In October we started on Cherry and Walnut keepsake boxes for our three grand daughters. (Two boxes are pictured above, the third had already been mailed out-of-town). We decided on a lift off lid rather than hinged. Inside on top is a sliding half tray with a fabric covered bottom. Each box measures 9×11x5 inches. Corners are quarter inch finger jointed. We placed a small tag inside each indicating the wood was harvested by the grand daughter's great, great uncle from his farm in WV and the approximate year.

For our five grandsons, we made each a small tool tote. The totes measure 16×9 inches with two tool wells. The totes are made of 1/2 inch Southern Yellow Pine with a 1/2 inch plywood bottom. The corners are half inch finger jointed. The handle scales are Cherry. We purchased a small junior tool set and birdhouse kit to assemble to go along with each tote.

Finally, for my mother, we made a kitchen trivet from her brother's Cherry with Black Walnut inlays and a ceramic tile center.

Each project was specially made for special people.

Thanks for looking. Merry Christmas to all.
