Project Information

I made this table for my wife, it is made from Red Oak, Poplar drawer sides, and Red Mahogany inlay. First time I have done any inlay work and I must say, I am very pleased with the way it came out and wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. I thought about using walnut for the inlay, but the mahogany definitely is a better match with the red oak. I finished with 8 coats of thinned Tung Oil and still have a coat of wax to put on when the oil fully cures. The boxes in the last photo are not mine, these were made by my Uncle who is now 92 years young and had just recently gave up his wood working. The boxes he has made are cherished in our family and I am glad to have a few of them, he did exceptional work.

Casper, I cut the dadoes for the shelf by hand, I was going to cut them before I glued the aprons and legs together, but I forgot to, so I used a small hand saw and chisel, which actually worked quite well and the shelf fit perfectly. No screws, just glued. I didn't cut the dadoes very deep, only a half inch from the inside corner of the leg.

Absolutely a beautiful table. I cannot get over the grain match on the drawers. Nice work.

Without a doubt , this is the most nicely proportioned table that I have seen here in a very long time !
The inlay is beautiful and I did think it was Walnut until reading your post …. Very nice grain match on the front apron and drawers . Are the handles also Mahogany and did you make them as well ? The shelf is also a nice addition : )

Oak is one of my favorite woods, and your table really shows off its beauty. When working with such simple, clean lines, it's easy to mess up the whole idea with too much decoration or ornamentation. To the contrary, your inlay does a wonderful job of accenting everything about the design. Congratulations!
