Project Information

Here is my final RG8 style custom 8 string guitar. It took me quite a while to finish but it is finally done! Solid Bubinga body with a Wenge accent stripe. Maple and Wenge laminated neck with a matching Bubinga accent veneer cut from the same wood as the body.

Rosewood fretboard with 24 frets
RG Style body but only 1.4 inches thick vs the standard 2 inches
Greater cutaway for high fret access
CTS 500k pots
Switchcraft Jack
Hipshot 8 string bridge
Hipshot String Ferrules
Hipshot Locking tuners
Bare Knuckle Pickups Aftermath bridge (Custom hand wound from the UK)
Bark Knuckle Pickups Cold Sweat neck (Custom hand wound from the UK)

The guitar is very heavy but the tone and sustain are amazing. It will be perfect as my studio guitar. As always I use the biggest strings available, 85-11.

I always admire those that can build and play instruments. 8 strings never heard of one, must be your own invention.

Love the guitar. My son and I are building our first guitar. I don't play and really didn't know anything about a guitar prior to starting. It has really been fun. I will post pictures once we are finished. One quick question. I noticed you direct mounted your pickups. We are doing a 7-string guitar and he wants the pickups also direct mounted. Can you tell me how you did that to get the correct height? Thanks!

I used threaded inserts that I screwed into the wood then I screwed the pickups into the threaded mounts with springs around the bolts like a typical guitar pickup setup

Sounds like a good idea. What size threaded insert did you use?

Thanks for all the info. You have been a great help. Any advice on how to install such tiny threaded inserts? What size hole do you drill and also did you just screw them in or using hex nuts and the drill press to screw them in?

you just screw them in by hand with a flat head screw driver, they are very fragile. The hole size will vary if you wood is soft or dense and hard.
