Project Information

I saw the article in Fine Woodworking and I just had to try my own shot at it. I made this one plus two others (drunken style) for a good friend of mine for their custom made cabinets. They are made of maple and the wide 1/2 inch ribbon is maple and walnut, the 3/8 ribbon is walnut, maple, purpleheart, and alder (alder cut from trees on their land), and the 1/4 inch ribbon is purpleheart. It was a fun project and I learned along the way. There was some frustrations too, since purpleheart is so brittle and doesn't like to bend. I had to abort my glue-up the first time around since right before my gap was closed it snapped and broke so I had to cut thinner strips. Oh well, I learned!

Nice result but I had the same issue with purpleheart. I stopped trying to use it in these boards.

I've had luck with the PH after some mild steaming with an old clothes iron. You need to be quick! In the end, the purple tends to blend in so not really worthy the effort.

These are beautiful boards keep them coming!

I've gone to using Padauk instead. Shows up better and easier to work.
