Project Information

I called this the "Mystery Box" for the simple reason that I have no idea what kind of wood it is. My best guess is cocobolo. I'm not real familiar with too many species of wood. I bought a box of exotic cutoffs from Rockler and received this chunk of wood in it. I didn't want to do too much to it, so I just squared it, rounded it off a bit and bored it out. The handle is black walnut, which I got from the hardwood cutoffs from Rockler too. Finished with oil and wax. I know many of you know what kind of wood it is and I would love to know. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.

The dark part does look like cocobolo, but I didn't know it changed color so dramatically.

At any rate, it's a beautiful little box.

Brad, nice job… I'd say cocobolo is very likely. It can have some pretty dramatic change between heart and sapwood. The walnut you used has some fairly dramatic grain too.

Here are a few cocobolo pictures from Cook Woods - cocobolo.

If it's really dense, reletively heavy and very oily it's cocobolo. Nice looking box.

I'm going to say Angelwood. I bought some from the Woodzone and it has the redish, almost purple heartish, color plus the spalted whitewood. It also has the abrupt change that yours does. Nice little box.

It might even be padauk. I've never seen it with sapwood. Nice looking box. I like the handle. And great colors, whatever it is.

Nice clean design. I like it. I recently bought a large chunk of padauk that is very similar to this that I plan to one day made a bandsaw box out of. What type of finish did you use?
