Project Information

This set of Adirondack chairs were built for one of the women I work with at my day job. She already has two, so this will complete her set of four. I have to admit I'm a little jealous of her though as I only have two in my back yard and mine don't match!

The chairs are made of pine and have been finished with white exterior latex paint. I counter-sunk the screws in the front stretcher, arm supports, seat slats, arms and back legs and used pine plugs to provide a nice solid exterior surface with no visable hardware.

I like the square look. Most Adirondack's all look "round" to me. Nice job.

I guess you'll just have to make a new set for yourself now!

Hi Darryl,

Nice design. Was this a design you came up with. I have never seen any quite like it. Great job on the finished product.

I can't take cradit for the design. I got this design from an issue of The Family Handyman a couple years ago. I like that it doesn't have the extreme slant in the seat that a traditional style chair has so these are super easy to get in and out of.

They are fun to make though! Although I'm not a huge fan of painting, seems it takes longer to paint them than it does to build them!

Very nice, you should have sawed some out for yourself at the same time.

Those are great!! If you were here in Houston, you and the paint on those chairs would be melting right about now!!

I did plan ahead a little bit Dick, I have enough parts precut to make 4 more chairs. They make for handy donations when I can't think of anything else! I just donated two unfinished chairs to my daughter's elementary school for a fundraiser. I think my next personal chair will be of the lovesear variety, I haven't tried that yet…

it was 47 in NH today, I wouldn't mind some of that Houston heat Matt!!

A very neat job on that chair. I admire your idea of concealing the hardware. Is pine selected because of costs?

I've got plans for a similar chair as the fine woodworking example, I just haven't ever got around to making one.

Sharad, I used pine for both financial and availability reasons - I got a bunch of it for free from my brother-in-law!

Your chair looks like an old style of lawn chair I have seen down here that I believe is called a Alabama plantation chair. I has these same features and lacks the rounded over shapes that Adirondack chairs typically have. Very nice, and free lumber, my favorite species!
