Project Information

I've been experimenting with different handles designs for screw drivers and chisels. This one is octagonal, 1.5" across flats. I turned the ends on the lathe and pressed a 1" OD steel tube section on the end. Sanding residue from the steel collar lodged in the open pores of the red oak. I rubbed the steel dust around to even out the appearance. I like to finish handles in bee's wax, which creates a nice grippy feeling.

I think the 1.5" octagon is little big. I'll try 1.25" next time.

Update:
Here are some of the other handle shapes I've tried. The octagonal shape on the screw drives works great, and I like having a dedicated tool for countersinking and deburring holes. I find the necked down section by the collar makes a nice spot for thumb and index finger during detail work like paring.

Nice work on the Handles I must say.
Not forgetting the business end of the chisel as well, as it looks like it could benefit from your skills as well

Dont forget something else also, when you get a chance your home page too… it needs a nice photo and possibly a home otherwise I might think you are one of the gypsies!

Nice tool. I used a similar finishing technique on a bottle opener that I made but I went even more extreme and completely stained the white wood with really fine copper dust. It will be interesting to see if the iron filings in the pores start to rust over time. So far my copper finish has not turned green but I put a pretty thick coat of lacquer on it to prevent that.

I forgot to ask if you have any other handle shapes you have tried. I am about to make some screw drivers and just cannot decide what shape to make them.

Well handled!

I like the vintage draw knife too.
