Project Information

After moving into a new home last year I have finally begun to get the shop into shape. It was a blank canvas, which was great, but also daunting. I hope I have planned it out well enough. I was pretty meticulous in Sketchup to really plan things out. First thing was to get some sturdy cabinets along the back wall. The basic idea was taken from Jay Bates design for his miter station, although I did not put my miter saw on this bench. This will be my power tool, drill press, and sharpening station. I love having all the drawers and I hope to someday upgrade the drawer fronts with some sexy hardwood. I am really happy I inserted the T-track for easy clamping options for all the sanding and kreg and jig saw or routing work. Quick and dirty and fast. I still haven't filled all the drawers!

Nice work, This would be fun and I get it that planning it you would be 2nd guessing the layout.

Good thinking on the deep drawers. There's always SOMETHING that's too big for "standard sized" drawers.

And I also noticed the vise (like Dutchy did) ... against that wall you wont be able to put anything very long on it.

I understand how the vise position would look confusing right now. There was a clear path to it at first, but the scrap wood is getting in the way now. Lumber cart is one of the winter projects. It's rarely used any. Just for little metal work here and there.

Good looking set of cabinets, you will not enjoy that extra space for long. Murphy has a habit of showing up and suddenly your drawers are full and you are building another one. LOL

Have to agree wit the position of the vise. You will not be able to move around it much and I promise you a hole in the wall somehow someday. Either by mistake or from frustration.

I'm thinking of moving it to the huge assembly table at some point and putting my DC in that corner. We'll see how that all shakes out. Thanks for the advise though.

I did the same thing.
I lined up a bunch of rolling tool cabinets minus the casters along the wall and placed three layers of MDF and one top layer of cabinet grade plywood on top.
It has worked out great.
Plus, all my bench top tools are mounted on top of rolling tool cabinets to move around as needed and it has made my small garage shop a lot more pleasant to work in.
I hope your new house and new shop give you years and years of enjoyment.
Your daughter in your avatar photo is a little cutie.
PS: I guarantee you'll be moving that vise to the center of the bench before long.

I am striving to get everything else on casters as well. It's a 14×30 shop space and although I THINK everything has a planned space, you never know in 10 years what you might acquire or want to put somewhere else.

My daughter in that pic is 4 years old, and she is almost 8 now. I have another little girl that just turned 3. Time to update my profile picture I guess:) Thanks for the comment!

Nice build. I'm sure it won't take long to fill all those drawers.
One suggestion, though, take it for what it's worth. If you do another build like this, you may find it's a lot easier to install all those drawer slides to the cabinet sides before you assemble the carcasses. It's also easier to install them accurately. That's my preference, anyway. I'm no fan of having my head in a cabinet if I can avoid it.

Calmudgeon: That is a brilliant idea! How did I never think of that or even stumble across it before? Next time…
