Project Information

Can I still be considered a beginner? I probably wasted a whole Saturday trying to figure out should I attempt this cove molding. Wasn't sure if i was ready for something like this and believe it or not, the glue up was actually the hardest part.
This piece was designed by David Marks on the DIY network. I used poplar and birch because that's all could justify spending while I'm in a learning and experiment stage. The base and the cove molding is over a inch and a half thick, the plans called for most of the other parts to be 7/8 of a inch I went with one inch. The drawers are constructed from birch plywood using dado joinery. I haven't decided on a finish but I'm gonna use "General Finishes" wipe-on and I'm gonna wait until i finish the other pieces to match i.e. bed and night stand.

This is a great Job a pretty challenging job for some one who considers themselves a beginner. A word of caution using poplar ,it can blotch when staining you might give it a coat of 1 lb cut of shellac before finishing
to help control blotch, a gel stain stays on the surface and will have less chance of blotching unless you rub it into the wood to much. No matter what finish you use try it on a test board first. You have done a very good job , David would be proud of you. Can't wait to see the finished project.

Wow, thanks guys for the responses. Blackcherry sounds good for a finish or blackwalnut that's what my wife's leaning towards. I like the natural wood look with a little tung or linseed oil.

Really nice work, chest of drawers looks great. I'll second the previous advise regarding the finishing on poplar but it can be done. Browns will cover the natural green of the poplar better than lighter colors. Walnut will work great.
