Project Information

So, after about two years I am finally ready for my first project post! My wife's sister got married this summer and as a gift I told her and her husband that I wanted to build them an end table for their new house. After discussing with them they decided they liked Rustic X End Table that Ana White had on her website. After looking it over I decided to go for it! It was great learning experience for me as I get into woodworking and hopefully is just the beginning of many more projects! This was made with all construction grade lumber and I really love the grain on the 2×6s that I used for the table top!

Good Looking table
I like the stain on the top ,
I really like the black frame and legs, makes a terrific combination.
Anna White pieces are quite simple designs and they look nice.
ONE DONE keep building and sharing with us !

I agree, that grain looks really cool!

Some here on LJ have poo poo'ed the 'construction grade' lumber, sure if you are building a spindley legged delicate looking piece you need a nice hardwood, but for a more robust look like this using anything but construction grade lumber is just silly. Oak or something would be really expensive and make a table way too heavy, and select grade pine or softwood of some kind with straight grain would make for a really boring top, but I digress.

What did you use for the stain and finish? I really like the way it highlights the grain with so much contrast.

Ted, I see the construction lumber as a gateway to hardwoods. It is easier to swallow the cost of screwing up a piece of 2×6 than it is to screw up a fine piece of black walnut! For the finish I just used Minwax oil base stain and finished it with 3 coats of Minwax polycrylic finish.

Ana has some interesting designs ,sometimes her joinery doesn't allow for wood movement so you have to investigate that before building, good job ,going for it is always the way we gain experience. Keep on going.

Great job

The problem with construction lumber is the moisture content. Ana white has some decent stuff but much of it doesn't allow for expansion/contraction causing gaps and problems in the future.
