Project Information
Back in 2012 I was a fairly new dad trying to figure out how the elementary system worked trying to fit in a new neighborhood. So when it came time for the annual festival I volunteered. Here is the first derby car I made for my son. I know . . . I know . . . he is the one that is suppose to build it, but come on . . . I'm a finish carpenter! I live for this sorta stuff hahahaa . . . So while he played with his Legos I played with a block of wood.
I got my inspiration from an animation movie that had just come out. A young penguin about the same age as my son. Happy, jolly, and adventurous so it was a good match.

I started by first tracing the block of wood onto a piece of copy paper.
Making 6 rectangles that I traced. One for each side.
Then I imagined it gliding down a huge slope of snow going down fast into the icy cold ocean.
I drew the penguin from images that I had searched using Google image search.
Once the drawing were transferred to the block of wood I got out my trusty Dremel tool and all the drilling bits that I had collected.
I removed the larger pieces by using a bandsaw.
Then when it came for the detail work I used what ever drill bit that was best fit for it.
I painted it all white to match the color of snow.
Painted the penguin's black body and arms, etc.
Added some long pins from a local hobby shop that also sold snow stickers for all of the snow that goes flying.
Added the wheels and walla! . . . "Glider" was born hahahaa . . .
My son ended up getting a ribbon for one of the "Best in Show" category.
