Project Information

when I started this project for the little womans first grandbaby I had never built a thing. I had no tools (although I was looking for a reason to buy a grizzly saw), I didn't even know the difference between a plunge router and a fixwd router. I decided to make the crib without the use of nails or screws so I went with all traditional joinery. I had walnut log that was dead for about 10 years that I cut and used a friends saw mill to cut it into lumber. I bought plans and started the project, then pretty much threw the plans away. Although I'm sure its not perfect I think in the end I made a pretty good looking, solid piece of furniture.

I am building a crib for my first grandbaby as we speak. I noticed a solid platform in the base of your crib (although it takes some gymnastics to see since the image is sideways). Is this for the mattress to sit on? Just a note from my own recent research, mattresses need to breath, so a slatted platform would be better. And if it is adjustable, make sure there is 26" between the platform and the top rail for safety. And the spacing between the railing slats should be no more than 2 3/8". I know these comments are too late for you, but perhaps they will help the next person who is designing a crib. Also, the projections on the front of the crib may not be the best idea once the child becomes a toddler and is moving around the room. They look like a hazard for a tiny head to bump into. Other than all that, congrats on your first project. Hope you enjoyed it and will build many more to follow. New projects provide unending challenges and rewards.

beth thank you for all a your wonderful observations. I am sorry the pictures came out sideways they were right side up but for some reason they are not on here. I know it is not the perfect bed but thank you for all your helpful insight. I have not found where the bottom needs to be open it may need to be and I can easily remedy. the slat spacing is exactly 2" which was done because I felt if 2-3/8 was safe 2 would be safer. The projections (tusk tenons) are rounded much more than the average coffee table. The bottom is not adjustable and is 30" from the bottom.

thanks guys I appreciate the comments. I have to thank Matt especially. He gave me some good advice and a little push forward on this project. He built a fantastic looking crib I considered trying to replicate but decided I didn't want to steal his design and go my own route.
