Project Information

I made these 2 chairs as a gift to some friends of ours. One chair has a small moon cut into the center back, the other a star. Cutting exactly sized back slats has proven to be tricky for me. I use a "precision taper jig" but it is not desireable. I think I could design something that works better. If anyone has any ideas please comment. Thanks.

These chairs look nice! Very clean… Are they comfortable? And why do they call them Adirondack chairs… do they come from that area or something?

Are they nappable?

Maybe you could make a template. Cut them close to size and then use a router and pattern bit.

Those are some fine looking chairs. I enjoy the Adirondack chair. Yes, it has something to do with the region and the popularity of the chairs when part of America started to see the Adirondacks as the ideal getaway for the summer. Something like that, I think.

BTW, I've had some trouble finding decent cedar stock here in Texas (there's quite a bit, but it's mostly for fencing). Any ideas, hints, or suggestions?

Have you considered cypress? It is available here in Texas and makes good Adirondacks. Also white oak.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. Jim B, I haven't tried cyprus, not sure how available it is around Minnesota. Waldschrat, here's a brief history of the adirondack chair. http://www.adirondackchairs.com/adirondack-chairs/adirondackchairhistoryarticle.cfm
They're very popular here in MN as well, since a lot of people own cabins and also they're just nice for sitting around a fire pit in the back yard on cool nights.
