Project Information

This was my first router table project. It is a keepsake box made from poplar.

After I cut out all the parts, I used a roundover bit to shape the lid, then finished with a Minwax stain and polyurethane, then engraved it on my CNC router.
Back at the router table, I cut rabbets into the ends of all four sides of the box, and a 1/4 dado about 1/2" up from the bottom. The dado snugly accepted a piece of 1/4 plywood for the bottom of the box, and the ends fit together quite nicely. I glued this up and finished it, then put the lid on with hinges.

I made this before I had a tablesaw. I might otherwise have done the rabbets and dado on the TS (maybe, maybe not).

If I were to do this again I would probably try something fancier, like a sliding lid, but I was in a time crunch for Mother's day anyway. I did get good experience on the router table doing this project, and the MIL loves it!

If it's not obvious from the pictures, dimensions are roughly 7×7x12".
