Project Information

This is a chess board I completed about 9 years ago. It was actually the first project I built that wasn't a military shadow box. I saw the project in Woodsmith #132. I followed the plans closely with the exception of the veneer. I used birdseye maple & stained it to resemble the recommended burl elm. Additionally, I chose not to use the inlay around the board.

The squares are individually cut from walnut and hard maple and chamfered on all four sides. I finished the board using several coats of polyurethane. This was before I discovered the beauty of tung oil. Overall, I'm pleased with how the board turned out.

That looks great. I'm adding it to my favorites, as I would like to make something similar some day. Thanks for posting it.

This one is a beauty! thanks for sharing. I think the choice not to use the inlay looks much better than similar tables with the inlay - makes this one look more like fine woodworking, then a woodworking chess table.

+1 for favorites!

I've added it to my favorites too, right next to Charlie's. Now I can incorporate the best of both!

The chamfered edges really make it pop, it stands out from cutting board style boards.

pat,
was it your intention to have the drawers come out the sides of the board instead of in front of the players?

i love the cabinet look. what is the overall size? it's gourgeous. the individual compartments are nice. not everyone goes the extra mile

I like the chamfered edged squares. I'd worry about glue squeeze out though. Did you have that problem?
