Project Information
This is a chess board I completed about 9 years ago. It was actually the first project I built that wasn't a military shadow box. I saw the project in Woodsmith #132. I followed the plans closely with the exception of the veneer. I used birdseye maple & stained it to resemble the recommended burl elm. Additionally, I chose not to use the inlay around the board.
The squares are individually cut from walnut and hard maple and chamfered on all four sides. I finished the board using several coats of polyurethane. This was before I discovered the beauty of tung oil. Overall, I'm pleased with how the board turned out.
