Project Information

I thought that as my primary focus is wood turning I would show you some of my wood turned platters. I am showing you a few platters in some of the series I do. They are Tye Dye a piece inspired by the tye dye T shirts I used to wear in the 60's, Fractured platters a study in the use of negative space and defects, and Enhanced where I add something simple to highlight the wood without disturbing the beauty of the wood. I hope you all like the work I did not want to do one posting on each piece. If my work gets a responce I will post more. I do much more than just platters.

Whoa, those are great! Glad you are able to pursue your art. Great talent there Sarg! Those are each strong enough to stand on their own. I would not mind a single post on each. Makes your project page look cool, like Trifern's turnings.

I love the use of space / no space on your fractured platters. I've done some myself, but most of those ended up in the fireplace. It is so hard to not finish out the voids. :) Nice work! What do you use for a final finish?

Very very nice. I can tell the finish is superb. I was wondering about the first plate. How did you achieve the rim effect?

I use an anoline dye which I burst with alcohol to achieve the tye dye effect. As for surface effects they are either dye, fire, or turn as though the voids don't exist. My favorite finish is laquer shot over a seal coat of a sanding sealer. I use all kinds of finishes from walnut oil to laquer just depends on the work and what the wood wants.

Freaky, man. Far out! I'm still wearing tye dyes, some things never change. My work has a lot of defects, too. I am hoping to get better. Very good work!

Nice looking platters. I especially like the "fractured" look. Thanks for sharing.
