Project Information

This is a box using koa on all 4 sides, maple for the top & bottom , aromatic red cedar for the corners, with wooden hinges made from zebrawood & maple. Koa is from Hawaii , because the lid was so big i put a brass chain to hold it open, the aromatic cedar was 1 1/4" X 1 1/4" using my router table & a heart pattern plate this is a similar set up on my jewerly box/music but that one i used a different pattern plate called E-Z link dovetail plate.I finished the box with natural danish oil with wet sanding to 600 grit & used shellac inside & out to finish it off.

Nice. I'm going to have to do the wooden hinges sometime, they just look so cool!

making wood hinges is not to hard if i can figure it out i'm sure you'll do OK, i just made box joints on my router table , set up the parts clamped together & drill your hole, just go easy & you'll have hinges.

Are those joints done on a Leigh dovetail jig, or is it something similar but custom?

the heart joints were done on my tablr router system & i used a special fence to do these hearts , if you want to see I'll show you what i use for a router table system , take a look at www.oak-park.com , this is the table router system i use.

Very nice. I'm very impressed because you did something that I tried to do and failed.

You must know something I don't know. I have the same router table system and I am very frustrated with it. I have tried several patterns and I cannot produce two pieces of wood that will fit together. They are always way too tight. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?
